Animals

Fish of all kinds, small birds and insects, but also wild animals like bears and wild boars are the protagonists of this selection of works.
The Roman art is full of animal presences, often called to serve different functions, from those purely ornamental to those with more significant values and social and ideological character.

The mosaics that adorned the floors of the rich stately homes were often studded with small animals, faithfully reproduced with great attention to detail. Large mosaic carpets with hunting scenes of ferocious and exotic animals used to decorate opulent domestic environments: the images described a custom, often the prerogative of the imperial family, of organizing hunting expeditions within the vast properties full of greenery.
