Poetry, music, and theatre

In Roman culture, as well as in Greek one, poetry, music and theatre played a fundamental role. Together with Apollo, the Muses, protectors of science and the arts, represented the supreme ideal of art.

Poetry also played an important role in children education, as in the case of Sulpicius Maximus, who died prematurely at the age of 11. His poem in Greek verses, composed during a "competition" of Greek poetry, was transcribed by his parents on his funeral monument.
