The exhibition Colori dei Romani. I Mosaici dalle Collezioni Capitolineis enriched with six new works
An important event that, through the colourful texture of these works, continues the story of the history of the city of Rome, illustrating in the most complete way the original contexts of discovery.
The exhibition is curated by Claudio Parisi Presicce, Nadia Agnoli and Serena Gugliemi and promoted by Roma Culture, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali. The design and direction of the exhibition is by the Sovrintendenza's architects Roberta De Marco and Monica Zelinotti, with the collaboration of Maria Cucchi and Simonetta De Cubellis. The short guide to the exhibition is published by Campisano Editore. Organised by Zètema Progetto Cultura.
The six works fit into the exhibition's itinerary, enriching the different thematic sections with new figurative and geometric motifs.
New coloured textures made with large tesserae of precious polychrome marble characterise the two mosaics in the first section, History and Technique of Mosaics, both dating from the third and fourth centuries AD.
The first has a chessboard motif with squares of different colours, while the second is decorated with a more complex composition of geometric and floral motifs. Tesserae of precious marbles, basalt and red porphyry, create an effective chromatic contrast.
The section Living and dwelling in Rome has also been enlarged to include new works: among these is the large floor mosaic with coffered decoration from a luxurious domus that stood on the Aventine in the Republican period. The exceptional state of conservation of the mosaic shows the floor intact in all its parts.
Finally, the section The Mosaics of the Tombs contains other unpublished works, including a black and white mosaic with a lively decoration of cupids surrounded by acanthus branches. The mosaic was the floor of a tomb discovered in Rome in 1936, during excavations for the construction of a church near Trastevere Station; the burial building was part of the necropolis that stood along the Via Portuense in Roman times.
