Musei Capitolini Centrale Montemartini

The permanent exhibition in Centrale Montemartini Musem has been enriched with new extraordinary masterpieces for too long stored in storages and only shown in temporary exhibitions.

It is the precious collection of grave goods of Crepereia Tryphaena that belonged to a young girl dead before her marriage composed of precious stones and gold jewels as well as exquisite toilet objects. Among these the wonderful ivory joined limb doll, a real masterpiece of Egyptian manufacture dating back to mid-II century A.D.
In the contiguous Column Room “Sala Colonne” it is possible to admire three stunning multi-coloured mosaics of highly refined manufacture, dating back to the republican age. One of the mosaics represents a labyrinth within a walled area dating 100 to 80 B.C.
Next to it two more small mosaics: one representing a lion surrounded by cupids, discovered in Anzio in 1749 and the other one representing a scene located along the Nile’s banks, a work of the second half of the I century B.C. and discovered in 1882 while Palazzo delle Esposizioni was being built.
In the upper  floor, in the Boiler Room “Sala Caldaie” another gorgeous floor mosaic of the mid-imperial age representing The Rape of Proserpina by Pluto, god of the afterlife found its natural place.
A precious basanite portrait-head of the empress Agrippina the younger, Claudius’ wife and Nero’s mother, is also shown to the public together with these works belonging to Capitolini Museums’ collections.  Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek of Copenaghen temporary lent us this sculpture that you can admire next to the female statue of “Orante”, from Capitolini Museums’ collections. It is made of this same precious stone coming  from Egypt where it also comes from
